Najwięcej ważnych zdjęć zrealizowałem jeżdżąc samochodem – z wnętrza lub z dachu auta. To pojazd jest moim statywem i to on doprowadza mnie do nie-miejsc, które zanikają na przedmieściach. Podróż i obrazy. Interesowało mnie piękno ingerencji w pejzaż i jego konsekwencje – asfalt, hale magazynowe, place budowy, rozkopane drogi, architektura, gruz, beton, krzaki wyrastające z płyt chodnikowych. Teraz odczuwam nadmiar fotografii cyfrowej, którą modyfikuje od 25 lat stosując zasadę eliminacji, często wymazując postać człowieka. Jednak pokazuje jego działania i konsekwencje funkcji jakie pełni w przestrzeni.

Jako artystę, nauczyciela fotografii, wykładowcę i kuratora interesują mnie nowe, jeszcze nienazwane, formy fotografii współczesnej, zarówno wyrażone przy pomocy technik historycznych, analogowych, jak i cyfrowych z użyciem AI, VR i innych.

Dr Maciej Stępiński – artysta, fotograf, twórca filmów wideo, wykładowca akademicki, kurator, członek komisji rekrutacyjnych, promotor dyplomów i licencjatów z fotografii. Absolwent ASP w Warszawie, École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie w Arles, we Francji. W 2022 obronił doktorat z fotografii na Wydziale Grafiki ASP w Warszawie. Adiunkt, na wydziale Rzeźby i Intermediów, kierunku fotografia, ASP w Gdańsku ( 2023-2024 ), prowadził wykłady i warsztaty w Institut Sainte Geneviève, w Paryżu ( Erasmus + ), kurator główny Międzynarodowego X Festiwalu Fotograficznego ‘W Ramach Sopotu’, współpraca kuratorska z Fotofestiwalem w Łodzi.

Jest autorem webinarów z historii fotografii, pracuje jako mentor fotografów wspierając ich długoterminowe projekty, wystawy i publikacje. Przez kilka lat współpracował z warszawską Galerią Leto, paryską Galerie Brumaire oraz Saffir Galerie Nomade z Marsylii, obecnie z Galerią AL/MA w Montpellier.

Swoje prace pokazywał za granicą: we Francji, Chinach, Kanadzie, Stanach Zjednoczonych, Niemczech, Maroko, Holandii, Wielkiej Brytanii, Hiszpanii oraz w Polsce (CSW Zamek Ujazdowski, Zachęta, Kordegarda, PGS, GGF, Muzeum Narodowe Gdańsk, BWA Wrocław, BWA Zielona Góra). Zdjęcia prezentował podczas Biennale fotografii i festiwali fotograficznych (Sopot, Arles, Kraków, Poznań, Łódź). Laureat nagród, rezydencji twórczych m.in. Kulturkontakt, Wiedeń, Artist in Residence program, 18th Street Art Center, Santa Monica, Kalifornia i stypendium: Mécènes du Sud, Marsylia, polskiego Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego, Drac Paca, Francja. Laureat nagrody głównej podczas Nocy Fotografii w Muzeum Warszawy.

Most of my important photographs were made while driving — from inside the car or standing on its roof. The vehicle itself is my tripod, leading me toward non-places that gradually disappear in the suburbs. Travel and images. I have always been interested in the beauty of human intervention in the landscape and its consequences — asphalt, warehouse halls, construction sites, dug-up roads, architecture, rubble, concrete, bushes growing through pavement slabs.

Today, I feel overwhelmed by the excess of digital photography, which for the past twenty-five years I have been transforming through a process of elimination, often erasing the human figure entirely. Yet human presence remains visible through its actions and through the consequences of the functions it performs within space.

As an artist, photography teacher, lecturer, and curator, I am interested in new, still unnamed forms of contemporary photography — whether expressed through historical and analogue techniques, or through digital media using AI, VR, and other emerging technologies.

Dr. Maciej Stępiński is an artist, photographer, video filmmaker, academic lecturer, curator, member of admissions committees, and supervisor of photography diploma and BA projects. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie. In 2022, he obtained a PhD in Photography from the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He worked as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Sculpture and Intermedia, Photography Department, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (2023–2024). He has conducted lectures and workshops at Institut Sainte Geneviève (Erasmus+), served as chief curator of the 10th International Photography Festival Within the Framework of Sopot, and collaborated curatorially with Fotofestiwal.

He is the author of webinars on the history of photography and works as a mentor for photographers, supporting their long-term projects, exhibitions, and publications. For several years he collaborated with Galeria Leto, Galerie Brumaire, and Saffir Galerie Nomade, and currently works with Galeria AL/MA.

His works have been exhibited internationally in France, China, Canada, the United States, Germany, Morocco, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Poland, including at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Zachęta National Gallery of Art, Kordegarda Gallery, State Gallery of Art in Sopot, Gdańsk City Gallery, National Museum in Gdańsk, BWA Wrocław, and BWA Zielona Góra. His photographs have been presented during photography biennials and festivals in Sopot, Arles, Kraków, Poznań, and Łódź.

He is the recipient of numerous awards, artistic residencies, and grants, including KulturKontakt Austria, the Artist in Residence Program at the 18th Street Arts Center, grants from Mécènes du Sud, the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, and DRAC PACA, France. He also received the main award during the Night of Photography at the Museum of Warsaw.
